Speaker Burn-Out

Looking for some ideas - I've run a Year 12 speaker programme this term that's been a bit heavy on business and finance, then realised next weeks is accountancy and I think I may lose the will completely, never mind the students! Any ideas for something a bit fun and interactive to do with a bunch of Yr 12 girls that are very hard to impress!! I've got about 45 minutes with them next Wednesday mid morning.

I have run a session on 'communication' and put different items in a bag and got the students to pick one at time and then they have to speak for a minute to the rest of the group about that item. Feedback from the rest of the group as we went along what was good and what could be improved. The students were shy at first but loved it.

Next bit was students sit back to back, one has a picture ,describes to the other one and they drawer it from the instructions and see who is closest. Not sure how many you have in the group. I did this with 18 students. Hope it helps.

Typing out questions

Does any one else find themselves typing out questions in advance of starting back at school or is it just me 🤣

Metaphors in careers work

What are your favourite metaphors/similes you’ve seen in your work? Metaphors can be great inspiration for creative practice.

The one that sticks in my mind most is the Sir Dominic Cadbury’s crazy paving quote - I heard it whilst at uni and it was the first time for me that it ‘clicked’ that I wouldn’t get away with passively waiting for a ‘career’ to fall at my feet!

Wanting to stay at break is the best kind of feedback - amazing stuff!

And client led metaphors… 😍 I love the glue gun one in particular. As well as the sticky mess route, I’ve seen clients who are too afraid to pick up the glue gun as they don’t feel they know how to use it, those who see its effects as too permanent… thanks for sharing!

Welcome!

Hi everyone 👋

Welcome to the Creative Guidance Circle. As a starter, what is the one thing in your guidance toolkit that you couldn’t do without, but that people might not expect from a career development professional?

Mine is stretchy fidget toys! Even careers leads love them 😁

Brilliant idea 🙂 I’ve just had training on that software and it is great to hear of it being used so successfully. I’ll have to have a play over the summer!
